Bioluminescence
June 1, 2025 - October 31, 2025
Bioluminescence in Florida’s Space Coast occurs primarily in the Indian River Lagoon, Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, and Banana River, near Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach. This natural phenomenon is caused by microscopic plankton, especially dinoflagellates, which emit light when disturbed. The best time to see it is from late spring to early fall, especially on calm, warm nights.
Activities like kayaking, boating, or swimming can trigger the glowing effect in the water. The Space Coast‘s warm waters and unique environmental conditions make it one of the best places in the world to witness this spectacular display.
Discover this fascinating example of nature’s ability to harness chemical energy and produce visible light!
